Odeya Rush Joins Jennifer Aniston In ‘Dumplin’

DEADLINEEXCLUSIVE: Odeya Rush is set to co-star along side Jennifer Aniston and Danielle Macdonald (Patti Cake$) in Dumplin’, a music-driven comedy à la Pitch Perfect and Bring It On directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, 27 Dresses)

The pic centers on Willowdean (Macdonald), nicknamed Dumplin, a confident, plus-sized, teen who, to spite her erstwhile beauty pageant queen mom (Aniston), enlists in a local pageant. What starts as an impulsive one-day protest snowballs as Will inadvertently becomes the inspiration for a ragtag group of teenage outcasts joining the pageant.

Rush will play Ellen ‘El’ Dryver, Willowdean’s best friend, who complicates things when she decides to enter the beauty pageant across Will.

Kristin Hahn wrote the script, which she based on Julie Murphy’s 2015 YA novel, and will produce the project with Michael Costigan (Ghost In The Shell), who will produce via his COTA Films banner.

CAA and UTA Independent Film Group are representing domestic.

Rush can be seen in the soon-to-be released film Lady Bird, the directorial debut pic from Greta Gerwig, which A24 is releasing. She’s repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment.

Introducing Odeya Rush, the Next Natalie Portman, and a Brand-New Coach & Rodarte Collection

On a recent Thursday evening, Musso and Frank Grill, an old school steakhouse widely heralded as Hollywood’s oldest restaurant, was packed. And not just your typical weekday crowd. It was wall to wall with famous people, from all different realms of celebrity. There were actors (Sasha Lane, Bella Heathcote, Selma Blair, Natasha Lyonne), directors (Miranda July, Gia Coppola, Amanda de Cadenet), musicians (Kim Gordon, Chloe and Halle Bailey), and a smattering of It-teens (Rowan Blanchard, Yara Shahidi) thrown in for good measure.

Also in the mix: Odeya Rush, the 19-year-old Isreali actress who rose to fame with 2014’s The Giver, which saw her acting alongside Meryl Streep, Jeff Bridges, and Taylor Swift. And yet, Rush was still starstruck.

“I love Parks and Recreation, and Rashida Jones and Aubrey Plaza were just standing there talking,” Rush recalled. “I kept looking over being like, ‘No, I’m not going to do it. But then I was like f— it and went over. My mind went blank and I couldn’t think of anything to say. Somehow I collected my thoughts and came back to reality. They are just the coolest people.”
